LiveLab was established in 2010 as the commercial arm of Griffith Film School in Brisbane. We operate as an in-house production studio, the only one of its kind in Australia, offering students a unique opportunity to work in industry whilst studying.
We cover all platforms of screen production, games and animation, mirroring the subjects taught at Griffith. Our aim is to produce creative content, innovative thinking and a professional service on par with the best production companies.
HOW WE WORK
When you come to LiveLab you access the largest student body of any film school in Australia. Our pool of talent is huge. You also get access to a wealth of industry-standard equipment and facilities. Each project can be tailored to your needs but may comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students, Griffith Film School staff, alumni and other creatives from industry. There will usually be at least one professional supervising the work. Overseeing the entire LiveLab slate is Creative Director Richard Fabb, a BAFTA-winning producer with over 26 years’ experience in the industry.
Students may work on projects through a number of academic courses, for which they gain credits towards their degree. Students are also able to work on productions simply in order to gain valuable experience, professional contacts, and industry credits on their CVs. As a general rule, students are not paid for the work they do through LiveLab.
We do a lot of work with charities, not-for-profits and local small businesses. These can be done for little or no cost under our Community Engagement program, which runs between late July and early November each year.
With other jobs, a budget is agreed that covers the hiring of a supervising professional and any other costs associated with the project, such as transport, props, specialist equipment and music. We charge a small percentage fee of the ‘in kind’ services provided.
LiveLab is also available as a co-production partner. This can be on larger-scale projects, including ones for broadcast or wider distribution.
LiveLab also functions as main industry liaison and works to create opportunities for internships and work placements, which is a course requirement for final year undergraduate film students.
Our scope is wide and covers everything from short information videos to feature films. Our vision is to help build a thriving and sustainable screen industry in Brisbane and South East Queensland.
LiveLab has access to the full range of Griffith Film School facilities and equipment. Access to it is dependent on student projects, so in some instances it may be necessary to hire in additional gear.
Our camera equipment includes Sony F3s, Blackmagic Cinema cameras and Sony EX1s. We have a limited number of Arri Alexas, which are in high student demand at certain times of the year.
In post-production we work with Adobe Premiere Pro, AVID Media Composer, Pro Tools, and DaVinci Resolve.
There is a TV studio, sound stage with 7m cyclorama green screen and a 90-seat cinema with Dolby 5.1 mixing desk (playback in Dolby 7.1).
